Modern Plateware - Introducing The Blate Collection - Minimalist Inspired Plateware

Blate Collection

It seems like there is a dish for everything these days. From pasta and soup bowls to cheese plates. And, if your home is anything like ours, there's just not enough space.

Therefore, I'm happy to introduce the Blate. Designed with the minimalist in mind, the blate is a simple, useful tried and tested balance of a bowl and a plate. Natural yet subtly refined, minimal and thoughtfully designed.

The organic collection comes in three sizes and could serve just about every purpose from a serving dish, dinnerware plate, salad dish, soup bowl, bread plate to dessert dish. Dishwasher and microwave safe, they are durable for everyday use and also create an understated and elegant touch to entertaining.

Each plate is unique and perfectly imperfect. Created by allowing the clay to go where it wants to go yet each blate has been refined for volume and size consistency. See details here.

If you’re looking to reduce clutter and free up some kitchen shelf space, you've met your match and our Blate Collection will become your one stop shop, go to dinnerware.

CLAY + CRAFT creates modern ceramics. From tabletop to unique kitchenware to vases and home décor. Simple and timeless designed home goods, made in California by ceramic artist Nicole Novena.

Super Easy + Healthy Miso Soup Recipe

Inspired by www.yummymummykitchen.com, here's our spin on a ridiculously easy healthy miso soup. It takes no more than 30 minutes to make and therefore, it is perfect for a weeknight meal. Plus, it's healthy and satisfying too.

I'm not the follow the recipe type so, if you're like me, I'll save you the scrolling through step after step instructions and give you the cliff notes version.

  • Start with a little olive oil, throw in onions and garlic. Add sliced mushrooms and bokchoy (or whatever you prefer...carrots, tofu, edamame). Saute for a few minutes until somewhat cooked and then put aside.
  • Next, make the miso soup. Start with 1 cup of water to roughly every tablespoon of miso paste (based on your preference). Also, add some freshly grated ginger and green onions. Whisk together while bringing to light simmer.
  • Meanwhile, boil an egg. You want it to be soft boiled so I've found around 10 minutes works for a soft boiled egg (but I'm not egg expert =)). Once cooked, cool instantly and de-shell.
  • Combine everything together and serve. Hint, hint, a simple modern soup or ramen bowl works great. Add avocado slices if you'd like.

If you'd prefer a more specific recipe with ingredient portions and details, check out this helpful recipe from @yummymummykitchen which inspired me here.

Blend a 1/2 ripe banana, 1/4 cup cashews, 1/4 cup almonds, 1/4 cup walnuts, almond milk (add slowly to gain the perfect consistency) and cinnamon. This makes about a serving. It's delightful!

"Pottery Is The New Yoga", Says Vogue

Vogue magazine recently published an article citing, "Pottery is the new yoga! Here's to the mind-clearing benefits of clay." We agree!!

While we've had a fancy for creating modern ceramics, handmade pottery and playing with clay for 20+ years, it is nice to see that pottery has become more and more popular. Of late, the world of pottery has woven its way into the industries of art, fashion, design and now health/wellness. The article is very relatable, noting the appeal and idiosyncrasies of clay and touches on why we love it!

Take a gander or better yet, read the full article.

New Season, New Glaze

Introducing "Oatmeal" our newest glaze. After a ridiculous amount of testing, this glaze is finally performing well (phew 👍). While it's not the loudest color you've ever seen, we're slowly branching out 😉 👏. It's looking great on our handmade ceramic coffee mugs, cups, bowls and carafes. I've used this for vases from time to time and I'm excited to expand it to our modern functional collection. It's a clean, white matte finish with unpredictable brown speckles. A subtle new take to our classic design. It pairs well with the beautiful Spring mornings and evenings we've been enjoying in San Diego!

clay + craft Jewelry

Say hello to our porcelain ceramic necklaces. Clay can be used for more than creating vases, dinnerware and drinking vessels. Our favorite necklace is the white crawl texture glaze. It's unique but follows to our less is more approach, creating a timeless piece of jewelry that's for a special night out or everyday use.

Take a look at our FASHION page for more details on these beauties.

Back At It - Throwing A "Reese" Vase

After a little break, I'm back on the wheel throwing a handmade modern vase! Here is a "Reese" vase. Named after my youngest niece it's the smallest vase within our Quinn Vase Series Collection. Each "Reese" vase begins with one pound of clay. The "Kenna" starts with 3 pounds and the "Camryn", our largest option is created with five pounds. The starting weight of the clay is the only commonality of each piece. From there I let the clay go where it wants to go and throw whatever it is I'm feeling. The result, a one of a kind piece as unique as the individuals their named after.
